Chapter Seventeen

Blaze couldn’t concentrate after he reluctantly left Devyn on her porch last night, stalking the perimeter of her house for hours in bear form. The incident at the cave made him uncomfortable and leery. What the hell was that shit? It was like being drugged. Blaze had enough experience with the shit Royce had shoved down his throat as a kid to know the feeling well, although he had never had such a strong reaction before. All his inhibitions and good intentions blew out the window once that glow started. Blaze hated not being in control. For most of his life, he’d needed to be in perfect control, the only way to keep the other side of him contained—to keep the rage and hate bottled.

Knowing what happened the few times he lost it, it was imperative—especially with Devyn. The risk was just too high. The thought of hurting her in any way gutted him. Blaze hadn’t slept a wink. Not in a million years would he have expected what happened at the cave, and would have never taken her there if he had. It just added a ton of more questions, all of which he didn’t have the first clue how to deal with, adding to his frustration.

Just like the song, Devyn was killing him softly—the smile on her face when he showed up or did the smallest thing, her sweet words, her little presents she got just for him—beyond special. She had no clue she was breaking him with each sweet gesture, but he wouldn’t change anything—except for his family and the bullshit coming. He wanted to claim Devyn, wanted her to be his completely, permanently, but he was still struggling if that was the right thing to do. His bear vehemently disagreed with him. The need to mate and claim, it wanted it just as much, needed it. He wouldn’t be able to hold back much longer.

The words, ‘You’re mine, abomination,’ echoed through his mind. He had heard them so many times from Royce, but now, they didn’t seem to have as much power. Maybe Jonah was right—it was time to accept what he was and finally deal with it, for all their sakes. Taking Royce out wouldn’t bother him, but taking out his brothers was another thing altogether. They were assholes, deserved to face some justice, but they were also blood. Could he live with wiping out his family?

Shit! Throwing the pen in his hand like a javelin, it stuck in the wall. He scrubbed his hands over his face, trying and failing to dislodge thoughts—his family shit, Devyn, the cave, the fucking unknown, and an uncertain future—but wasn’t getting anywhere. The rage inside him was building, his skin stretching too thin to contain it. Blaze had been barely keeping the beast at bay and was losing it, knowing his days on this planet were numbered. He had an idea what was building inside of him and now knew the consequences of letting it free—annihilation. What
